Born on June 12, 1973, in the village of Ermakovskoye, located in the northeast of the Krasnoyarsk Krai. Despite being born in Siberia, Safonov's parents were not natives of the region. His father worked as a chief engineer on the construction of the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station, while his mother was a Russian language and literature teacher, as well as a writer.
