Upon arriving in London, Crusoe is met with a proposal by the captain of a ship to join him on a voyage to Guinea in Africa. He does not have to pay for the journey because the captain has taken a liking to him and wants to keep him around as good company, inspired by his conversation.
The journey proves to be successful: “This was the only voyage which I may say was successful in all my adventures” (Defoe 20). Crusoe makes a lot of money, 300 pounds, by selling goods, part of which he uses to become a proper merchant trader when he is back in London.
