Gitta gschwendtner biography examples

Gitta Gschwendtner is originally from Hamburg but has been living in London for over 20 years and has worked from her studio in Hackney, east London, for 12 years.

She studied at Central Saint Martins and developed an interest in functional, three dimensionsal design. As well as a furniture designer, she also designs exhibition spaces.

Her 'Bodge Series' started as part of a bodging workshop in 2010.

Bodging is the traditional way of creating Windsor chairs from green timber using only hand tools close to the place where the tree was felled. This process foregrounds sustainable making on a small scale and highlights woodlands’ capacity to nurture creativity.

During the workshop in Clissett Wood, Gschwendtner created this two-seater ash and sycamore bench over five days, which inspired a range of factory made pieces including a six metre bench as well as a side chair.
